This month Michelle Obama is seen reclining on the cover of Vogue in a designer dress. Most stories about her mention what she is wearing. Should they?
Why don,t jpurnalists at his press conference mention the design of BaRAck Obama,s tie, the coloour of his shirt and the stripes in his suits?
On the other hand, a woman writes in the Washington Post: The firtst lady is a composite; she is not getting attention soley for her clothes. To give Michelle Obama her due, can,t we acknowledge that b y mentioning her speech and, in the same breath, noting the smart white collar and cuffs onthe outfit she wore for her speech at the Education Department?
Should wepay any attention to Michelle Obama,s clothes
Isn,t this a kind of reverse sexism?
What do you think?
Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but there has been at least some talk of the President’s attire. He’s more casually dressed at work and some (nitwits) suggest that means he has little respect for the office. When he “frocks up”, he deserves the cover of Gentleman’s Quarterly (or whatever the male equivalent of Vogue is). He looks better in a suit and tie than most men.
Michelle Obama wears clothes well and has a natural grace. She also makes it clear that she buys much of her clothes off the rack or via the Internet. She is the perfect person to champion a new low key chique and some long overdue abstemiousness in the American culture. She is also representing the White House and Administration at nearly daily functions, putting her stamp on the “First Lady” role with warmth and intelligence.
The press can be pretty superficial. It is easier to report on her outfit than the content of her speeches and it will get more attention from the public. It says more about our society than anything else.
We’re pretty much in agreement, Barbara. It’s my opinion that people focus on what others are wearing when they can’t think of anything else about which to talk. Costuming is a way of attracting attention, but it shouldn’t be the focus of peoples’ lives, should it? Unless they’re in the business, that is.
I couldn’t care less what the US current royal couple wears and where. However, I do care about what they say and do. So far, it is mostly pleasing to hear and witness.
I would hope that Obama pays more attention to what he wears. For the most part the suits he wears make him look like an undertaker without a tie.
Let him get a little more stylish.
I recall Obama putting his hands in his pockets while walking. He went from two hands to one hand. Finally he has broken the habit and looks a lot smarter.
Clothes are importatnt they tell something about our character it all depends on what we want to portray.
My wife is a classy dresser. I tend towards military clothes. Bomber jackets, long sleeve shirts with pockets, clean shaven and short hair.
Whilst checking out Michelle’s legs, I’ve never caught up to her dress style.
I enjoy clothes in general. I find that Michelle is a better role model than most women that are in the public’s eye. She dresses classy and is pleasing to look at. But it is not her clothes only, it is how she wears them. Besides she seems a very intelligent lady that compliments her husband well.
So, yes I enjoy reading about her clothes and looking at pictures that show them.
