A group of British scientists has generated sperm from male embryonic stem cells that fertilized female mice and produced offspring. The same group is now working on creating sperm from women’s bone marrow stem cells and is expected to report its findinghs within weeks.
The leader of the group says the idea of a woman’s stem cells givingh rise to sperm that could be used o fetilize another woman’s egg “scientifically, in prinicple, is possible.”
The ability for a woman to create eggs from stem cells may also allow her to conceive at a later age. There areother benefits in the fertility field that might accrue from these experiments.
Still the very idea of lesbian couples having a baby with their own genetic material is sure to horrify some people.
So should this kind of experimentation be banned? Or is it a good thing?
What do you think?
I say: perfect the technique and then make it mandatory across the planet that all conception take place this way.
Women only participating in the conception and creation of human life; women only resulting as offspring.
In a generation or two, men will disappear thus eliminating the source of all evil things that occur in human life. No more war, no more global warming, no more cheating on women.
Hey, that men are evil is pretty much all we ever hear…so now we have the opportunity to do away with them once and for all!
Wow, Tony! You are bitter!
To the question, then: What can be done will be done. By somebody. And somebody else will fund it. And then still somebody else will buy it.
It’s human nature. First, we invent god, then we beat it to death with our own superiority.
And who’s going to stop us?
Whether this kind of conception will occur or not, a lot of us ladies still will like male companionship. And who is going to do all the jobs around the house, like cutting grass and small renovations, change car tires for ladies that do not know how.
Tony,
I do not think that all evil comes from men. Only about 50%!!
Progress will continue, but somehow this seems to me backwards since we already have more than enough sperms in sperm banks. And to extract bone marrow is quite a painful experience and I would not recommand it if it is not absolutely nessesary.
We already have the means to eliminate all life forms from earth and, technically, to create new ones…so why stop? Maybe, just maybe, some day good plain horse sense will prevail.
Should it be banned or is it a good thing?, its to early to tell. If a human person were to be born out of this procedure we could not condemn the birth.
Pro life groups would have to support the birth.
From a scientific point of view, I would wonder if the result of such toying around with the “classical” method of reproduction will lead to healthy and normal babies. The human organism is a tremendously complex system and all it takes is a minor oversight, totally unforesseen, to create a catastrophe.
I’m not sure what I think about Gay people/ single people having babies. My opinion has changed dramatically over the years. Frankly, I’m older, better informed, and more open to the changing world. Lots of people should NEVER have children. If I am right, the Gay population is only about 1%, so we needn’t be afraid of a major upset of any kind, by inclusion. So, I vote YES!
