SHOULD PROSTITUTION BE LEGALIZED?

A group of prostitutes are bringing a case in the courts against Canada’s laws on prostitution. The women want  the courts to strike down prohibitions against living off the avails of prostitution, communicating with potential clients and setting up brothels.

The courts must decide whether the current law is proportionate to its purpose, or whether it forces prostitutes into unsafe situations where they can  become easy prey of deviants and serial killers.

Do thecurrent laws target women and put women in more danger?

Should prostitution be legal?

What do you think?

  1. You can’t legislate morality. Our current situation is just a big show of hypocrisy.

Legalize it already! It’s time to come down off that moral high horse and realize that some women ~want~ to make money selling sex. It’s their body, their life, their right.

Of course prostitution should be legal!

And I don’t see where it has anything at all to do with “morality.”

Prostitution should be as legal as gay marriage and abortion is.

OK Tony, I’ll bite – how legal should gay marriage be? What about abortion?

    Joe:

…gay marriage and abortion should be as legal as…prostitution!

It would not be the only profession that could be considered morally suspect.

In Germany, prostitution is legal if the trade is plied within government-supervised brothels. The sex workers are safe and their health is monitored.

I say legalize it. I’m not even sure what the rationale is for keeping it illegal…unless it has something to do with that bus that Tonys on.

    Good morrow, all!
Legalize it. Regulate it. Tax it.
Consider how effective the prohibition against alcohol worked in the US. Was it simply a coincidence that the year Prohibition was repealed, the first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous were held? If there was no booze *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*) how could anyone have become an alcoholic? But, I digress…
The demand for sex on demand will never go away, as long as human males think with their gonads. Of course, much the same could be said of war, corporate plundering of the environment, politics, religion…hmmm…there’s a pattern here, I believe…but, I digress…
PJ O’Rourke referred to Congress as a “Parliament of Whores”, and that is an insult to the real professionals. At least pros give value for the money they’re paid, and they don’t pretend to be something else…unless you pay extra for the role-playing feature…but, I digress…
There are far worse things you can do to someone than give them an orgasm. If the sex is consensual, and the price is agreeable, and nobody get hurts, wherein lies the crime? Nobody dies, nobody is robbed, fair value is exchanged, and each party gets what it wants. Couldn’t get much more free market than that. And, if it’s legal, regulated and taxed, even Harpoon gets to dip his…er, beak.
Legalize it. Regulate it. Tax it. It’s the grown-up thing to do.
Or would that be asking too much? – CTZen
