SHOULD CANADA ACCEPT GITMO PRISONERS?

Several national polls show Canadians strongly support President Obama’s plan to close the prison at Guatanamo Bay.  Should not Canadians then put their money where there mouth is?

The Obama administration has been appealing to other countries to help in the process by taking some of the detainees.  England has taken some.  So has Ireland.  So, Ibelieve, has Bermuda.

Not our country.  Ottawa turned down Obama flat.  And thus considerably irritated the White House.

Should Canada take some Gitmo prisoners?

What do you think?

I think a poll should be taken of the Gitmo prisoners themselves where they are asked if they want to leave.

From what I hear, many don’t want to leave. Indeed, they’ve never had it so good and if they had the choice between going back to “freedom” in their own countries and staying behind bars in Gitmo, many would choose the latter.

Of course Canada should accept a Gitmo prisoner or two or three. Many were ratted out by enemies back home or were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Take these into Canadian custody and apply Canadian justice. They would, no doubt, need help adjusting to the outside world, IF they are released. If Canada is the kind of country it claims to be — I am not sure any country could live up to that, but that’s another question — then it should “man up” to its rhetoric. And yes, Bermuda took three former Gitmo prisoners.

  3. Even little Tuvalu took in 8 Uighur prisonners who had been freed but had nowhere to go. We could, at the very least, take one: Omar Khader who is our citizen…like it or not.

Would somebody please ’splain to me why other countries are “adopting” these prisoners? Why they’re being asked to do so and why are they doing it? And why would we?

The USA created that particular mess. Why do they not re-distribute the Gitmo Gang within their own borders?

I don’t get it, you try them at Guatanamo. If they are guilty, you send them proportionally to Countries who have a stake, namely, Canada.
If they are innocent, you release them and send them back to their own Country.

Common sense, unless I am missing something, which hasn’t so far been revealed to me.

I am sure someone is going to say you can’t try them at Guatanamo. Hello, then try them where they can be tried and get the damn thing over and save tax payers dollar.
